S-Media editors are examining the best storylines of 2012, and we’d like to hear your thoughts and opinions.

By Gordie Bowles, S-Media
The 10 best moments of the year (so far) ... what’s your pick?
Show me the words! (imagine us editors screaming this in our best Jerry McGuire voice). There is no doubt it has been an epic season for Canadian snowsports athletes. It has also been one of Canada’s most tragic with the loss of the brightest of them all, Sarah Burke. But at this moment, S-Media editors are examining the best storylines of 2012, and we’d like to hear your thoughts and opinions.
RULES: In 50 words or less (that’s like a monster tweet), tell us your choice from these 10 moments and explain why. If you feel we missed one, you’d better be ready to back your comments with facts, as we don’t miss anything (no sarcasm there, ahem!). To comment, use the commenting tool at the bottom of this article. You will need to include your e-mail address so we can contact you if you are selected as a winner.
PRIZES: Three prizes to be awarded based on the best response, as chosen by the S-Media editorial staff. Good luck!
- 1st prize — Columbia jacket
- 2nd prize — Head backpack
- 3rd prize — Silverfoot custom S-Media toque
Winners will be announced Monday, Feb. 27, in our Weekly Wrap e-newsletter, as well as on our Facebook page.
Killer Instinct: Kershaw on a tear
Devon Kershaw has emerged this season as a world beater after convincing his toughest critic, himself, that outperforming Scandinavian powerhouse skiers is a doable feat. The 29-year-old cross-country skier won two World Cup races in less than two weeks in February, the second one by passing four skiers over the final few metres, including sneaking by a Russian skier who was victim to a premature victory celebration. The excitable Canuck from Canmore, Alberta, via Sudbury, Ontario, is showing great potential and could drag this sport by its ears into the living rooms and Canadian mainstream sports conscience.
A King is Born: Kingsbury wins six in a row, then some more
Alex who? Young freestyle skier Mikael Kingsbury, teammate to the temporarily sidelined Alex Bilodeau, won a record six World Cup races in a row this season before taking a small step down the podium to the silver-medal spot at Park City, Utah. He quickly rebounded with two more consecutive moguls victories, the latest at Naeba, Japan, where he led a four-medal day for the Canadian team. His season record stands at eight wins in 10 events.
Cowboys Reign: Hudec wins at Chamonix, Guay 3rd, Thomsen 5th
It was one of the greatest days in Canadian alpine history when Jan Hudec won a World Cup downhill at Chamonix, France, while teammate Erik Guay finished third and young Ben Thomsen finished fifth after starting in the 50th position. Hudec, whose career has been blighted by knee injuries and operations, won for the first time in more than four years, thumping his chest with his fist when he realized his long wait had ended. “Today was a culmination of 10 years of up and down drama,” Hudec said in a post-race conference call. “It’s hard to describe in a few words. Unfortunately this year our team is a little bit smaller than usual. We’ve got a lot of guys out, but in the last couple of months, we’ve tightened down the hatches and been doing every little thing to make us all faster.”
Blue Magic: Leman, Thompson give Canada a ski cross sweep at Blue
Emerging ski cross star Marielle Thompson of Whistler, B.C., won her first ski cross World Cup gold medal at Blue Mountain, Ontario, while Canadians Brady Leman and Chris Del Bosco delivered one of the most exciting finales of the season, finishing first and second, respectively, in the men’s competition. Leman, 25, is having a remarkable comeback year after a long spell on the sidelines due to injury. He won the opening World Cup race of the season at Innichen/San Candido, Italy, and is leading the overall ski cross standings with 331 points, ahead of Switzerland’s Alex Fiva (321) and Del Bosco (254). “It was awesome,” Leman said. “It’s beyond words for me, it’s amazing to have such a good performance on home soil and have the home crowd respond and just going crazy.”
Back flip for the Ages: Josh Dueck goes inverted, gains celeb fans
Paralympian Josh Dueck, a former freestyle coach who broke his back in 2004 when he overshot a demonstration jump and lost the use of his legs, was invited to appear on the hit talk-variety show Ellen DeGeneres after a video of the sit-skier performing a back flip went viral on YouTube. “It was amazing,” said Dueck, who made the trip to Los Angeles with his wife, Lacey, to take part in the filming of the show. “It’s so good to meet someone that is so grounded and that down to earth, but also that has that celebrity power. She was a treat to work with.” Dueck is the first sit-skier to execute a back flip. See the YouTube video of the flip.
Party Crashers: Canadians score rare U.S. nationals podium sweep
Canadian team racers Louis-Pierre Hélie, Dustin Cook and Morgan Pridy completed a sweep of the men’s podium at the U.S. downhill championships at Aspen, Colorado, the first time in 17 years that Canada has finished 1-2-3 at the event. That bettered the previous team-best result from Darin McBeath and Kevin Wert in 2000 when the two placed second and third. “Today was awesome,” said Hélie. “U.S. nationals where the Canadians sweep is pretty cool.”
Rise of the Late Bloomers: Thomsen, Pridy soar
Canada’s new downhill sensation Ben Thomsen proved he’s the real deal in early February when he finished an astounding second place at the test event for the Sochi 2014 Olympics, giving the 24-year-old his first career World Cup podium. Thomsen has progressed from minor leaguer to talented prospect to superstar, all in the matter of a few weeks. The “late bloomer” had been grinding out a career in the minors on the Nor-Am tour for most of the past seven years, with only nine top-10 Nor-Am finishes and one podium in 90 starts. But has been turning heads all season with a go-for-broke style and technical precision to match the sport’s best. Meanwhile, his teammate Conrad Pridy, also a late charger, has made the most of his opportunities this season, breaking out in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, with a 25th-place finish and then returning to North America and claiming his first career Nor-Am race, a downhill at Aspen, Colorado, by a huge margin of 0.76 seconds.
Unlucky in Love, Unstoppable Everywhere Else: Vonn dominates slopes again
Rumour has it the Queen of Downhill was dateless on Valentine’s Day, but no matter, within a week the overall World Cup points leader, likely the best female ski racer of all time, was back to winning, claiming the downhill and super-combined overall titles to go along with her career 50th World Cup win earlier in the month at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. “It’s crazy, I am at a loss for words,” said Vonn. “Fifty World Cup wins is a huge mark for me in my career and more than I even thought possible. I just wanted the 50th win.”
Aerials Wonder: Rochon emerges as new star, wins in Calgary
Canadian aerialist Olivier Rochon won his first FIS World Cup event at Canada OIympic Park in Calgary, Alberta, capping off a six-medal weekend for the Canadian freestylers in late January. The Gatineau, Quebec, skier followed up with three more podium finishes, the last a bronze medal at Beida Lake, China, keeping a grip on the yellow leader’s bib by a margin of 50 points over Chinese aerialist Jia Zongyang. When asked if he’s feeling pressure to keep amassing results, Rochon replied, “I try not to look at the big picture, when I do that I get ahead of myself and I learned the hard way that when I get ahead of myself I go down. So, I’m working really hard to stay in the moment and look at everything jump by jump.”
Turski Terrific: Dew Tour and X Games champ shows unbeatable form
The 2012 Dew Tour wrapped up at Snowbasin, Utah, with another win by Canadian Kaya Turski, who also won the X Games in late January and was crowned X Games female athlete of the year. In short, the skier has had a perfect season so far, winning every slopestyle event she’s entered. “I feel like all my hard work’s been paying off — in the gym and the summer and with my coaches and sponsor. It’s exciting to have it all pay off.”

harriet huestisJosh Dueck back flip. So Inspirational.
Joey O'BrienWow, who to pick... Brady Leaman for breaking his leg so many times and never giving up - getting dropped by the National team at the same time as Skier Cross comes to life - then breaking his leg again before the Olympics..
Jan for enduring 7 surgeries...living off next to no money for his entire life - Not to mention his parents sailing across the Adriatic sea in a home made sail boat to escape Communism. Jan Senior used non marine grade glue and the boat was literally falling apart as they approached Italy. Mother Vladi had a crying baby Jan in her arms while bailing and Jan senior was sailing as fast as he could to hit shore before the boat fell apart.
Jan was not going to be allowed to race in Lake Louise unless he came up with $15K to pay his team fees this year.
Devon for not giving up - coming so close at the Olympics and not medaling - like most athletes living off no money until he is now winning.
And last and not least Ben Thompson - for being told "go home" at so many levels and never giving up. His family scraping the $$ together each year for his skiing. His dad for being one of the best coaches in the country.
So, my vote goes to Jan. Not that the others don't deserve it... but I think he toiled the longest, had the hardest road and really deserves the recognition.
curt matteWhat's it going to take --- teamwork --everyone -- goog job !
john deanSo many great moments in skiing to choose from! Vonn's feat is pretty amazing but she's not Canadian so I am crossing her off my list. I'm going with the Cowboys at Chamonix. It's a great downhill success story and brings back memories of how we dominated that sport when the likes of Murray, Read and Podborski ruled the circuit. That's why it's the 'Cowboys Reign' for me!
Kim StennerCanadian sweep the US podium....because it's always so sweet
Emilie-Virginie DesforgesCowboys Reign: Hudec wins at Chamonix, Guay 3rd, Thomsen 5th
Hudec has the purest and most emotional story of them all. family history, unbeleivable ammounts of come backs. Everytime he comes back, he is that much better...fallowed by Guay that accumulates triumph while waiting on Hudecs come backs and Thomson, the new sensation and the future of the cowboys reign...BAM !!!
Graham CopeI was going to say "Cowboys Reign" but Josh Dueck's Backflip for the Ages is an epic story of perseverence and success under adversity. Have to go with Josh.
Boyd WiebeI really liked the "Cowboys Reign" story. After all these Canadian team guys and support staff have been through, especially Jan, fighting through injuries, budgeting issues, crazy travel schedules etc. they pulled off a mighty show that day! And how to take a rookie along with them. Sweet inspiration!
Colin CathreaWhen Jan Hudec won a World Cup downhill at Chamonix the entire lodge at Marmot Basin in Jasper erupted. I had been following Jan on Facebook all season and his posts were great. It was like riding along with the National Team through Europe. His reaction in the finish area was a culmination of repaired knees, intense physio, and a tough road back.
lorri chahwanI like the cowboys reign in Chamonix, as Jan Hudec has really persevered and really deserves the win, also a wonderful bonus to have Eric Guay in third and great showing for the youngster, Ben Thomsen!!
MilkmanShould be a list of top 11 moments and include Mark McMorris' wins at X-Games.
Who'd a thunk a Prairie boy from a small hill in Saskatchewan would win double gold at X-Games. Rejoice for those who ride as much as for those who glide.
Mike EdwardsOf the ones listed, "
Party Crashers: Canadians score rare U.S. nationals podium sweep" would be my first choice of an event to swell Canadian pride in our snow sports athletes. However, it is just a year ago when Rod Black commentated on the Canada Winter Games pipe - snowboard events at Ski Martock on TSN. I was there and what he said was completely true. It was a perfectly clear "blue sky" day with no wind, mild temperatures, happy crowds; and with great competition in Martock's perfect pipe. Rod said how "he had covered many World Cup Events over his broadcast career and this event that Martock has put on is right up there for organization, class and venue." That's a moment we will remember as even locals competed with the rest of the country placing near the top. They are the snow sports athletes of the future.
Nicole H.Canadians sweep U.S. Nationals Podium. 1-2-3, back on the radar as a reminder that Canadians are strong, solid competition in winter sports. Not to be under-estimated! Way to go guys! Almost reminiscent of the 2010 Olympic results; foreshadowing for 2014? I hope so!
Wendy McPhersonEric Guay is shining brightly for Canada, thanks for giving us hope for 2014!
Jody RabyBack flip for the Ages: Josh Dueck goes inverted, gains celeb fans because he's the first Paralympian to do a back flip and that's very inspirational to all athletes with disabilities that hard work can really pay off and the sky's the limit!!!
Liam Hanrahan-PowersJosh Dueck... Perhaps a diamond in the rough on this top 10 list, but man-oh-man. Talk about never giving up and just living it up day after day. What more could you ask for. This guy is an inspiration to everyone, on and off the hill.
julie gDefinately Josh Dueck's back flip. Love his story. Very inspirational.
M&H ThibeaultAll of the moments highlighted above are worthy of top mention! These athletes dedicate their lives to chasing gold and it takes a lot of guts to sacrifice so much for a small glimmer of glory. On a personal level, I have to say that Josh Dueck's backflip gave me goose bumps when I watched it. He exemplifies what it means to go beyond ones' limits and stare at fear right in the eyes. He has a powerful message for us all: Live life to the max - independent of what obstacles you face!
Jen CThe Cowboys are definitely in the history books for Chamonix and the sweep at Blue Mountain was awesome, but Josh Dueck takes it. It gives the message that the impossible is possible. Such a positive message, especially after Sarah's passing.
Paul RuddenThomsen and Pridy have been big surprises this year. Just as it looked like the Canadian team was on the skids due to injuries and age these two guys step up and give us lots to cheer for now and into the future.
Eddie HicksAll incredible, especially the dominance of Mik and Kaya. But the hands down favorite has to be Josh Dueck's back flip on a sit ski. The way he responded to his accident and came right back to the sport to race downhill go to the paralympics and now blow everyone away by doing a back flip on a sit ski is simply in a league of it's own.
Sophie McGregorThese are all great athletes with tremendous accomplishments. If I have to pick, I pick Olivier Rochon for coming back after a one-year suspension. Not only did he come back physically stronger, but he came back mentally stronger and that's put him on the podium. I am very impressed with his work ethic and with the fact that he was willing to face his demons and come out on top.
Jason E WoodsI vote for "Cowboys Reign: Hudec wins at Chamonix, Guay 3rd, Thomsen 5th" Maybe it's 'cause I watched it live on TV, maybe it's 'cause it's World Cup Downhill, but reminded me of the Crazy Canucks and I loved it.
Margaret BlokhuisAs proud as I am of our Canadian cowboys this year, a story that truly touched my heart this year was Josh Dueck. I first saw the show at Frestivalle in Calgary this fall and was instantly touched by his story. Lets say the tears were flowing. Then this month to see him do a flip on the sit ski wow. He is one crazy guy who will not give up on something that he loves to do. An inspiration to all. I have a friend who is teaching a young girl to be on a sit ski this winter and we talked about Josh and what do you know there he was on Ellen. I quickly shared the link with my friend and this was another great moment. He is inspiring others to never give up on your passion and dreams..
On another note money that was won at the Banff film festival from the movie freedom chair was donated to Rocky Mountain Adaptive and now new sit skis are being purchased and more teaching can happen!! Wow they no longer have to learn on old hand me downs. Truly an amazing story all the way around.
Kevin GilchristNo doubt the best moment this year was seeing Ben Thomsen place in the top five after his community banded together to make sure he was able to pay his way to the World Cup downhill at Chamonix. Made me proud to be a Canadian!
Mitchell CraigDefinatley Josh Dueck's backflip. Most unreal and coolest thing I've ever seen!
andrea johnsonKiller Instinct: Kershaw on a tear
an inspiring moment in sports!
DeniseMy vote goes to Josh Dueck and his back flip. He not only chases his own dreams, but inspires others to do the same.
Kevin MikkelsenSamson Daniels & Josh Dueck:
Sam's rookie-year gold medal in MonoSkierX and Josh's bronze medal (Josh was rookie-year gold medal winner in 2011) at the 2012 Winter X Games and Josh's backflip are nothing short of inspirational, proving that anything is possible.
Having the good fortune to meet and work with both of these exceptional men during the IPC and Paralympic events in Whistler has been a real eyeopener. Sam, Josh and all the para-athletes I know prove that courage and determination in the face of adversity are what make the spirit soar.
My only wish is that the mainstream media would realize what a better world this place is with these amazing para-athletes in it and give them the recognition that they truly deserve and that society needs.
Jay HowsonThanks , make my life tough . As a Starter in Collingwood I've seen them all . But for Hudec to come back from all his Injuries and come through has to give a boost to all our teams .Now if Kelly can do it even better . I started her at Osler Bluffs many times and knew she would be great. As I said I've seen most of them Read ,Pod , Graham and the rest
Kathie coulterI think the Gold Medal goes to Kelly Vanderbeek for showing courage, patience and determination in her comeback this year. She had to overcome the obstacles of fear and failure and came out not last but first in my estimation of what a true competitor is made of. Kelly began training in my local ski club Chicopee in Kitchener, Ontario and we are hoping for her success in whichever road she chooses to take. Way to go Kelly!
ColpittsCowboys Reign! Pretty cool to have Canadians as the majority in the top 5 in any sport!
Sean PynaertMy fave is the Canadians sweep the U.S. podium. I love stuff like that, stick it to them, they always do that to us!
Kathy R.Josh Dueck..I could dream it..but he DID it!!
don mcgregorKingsbury represents the youth in sport and to me seeing a young newcomer come along and dominate gives me hope for our future Olympic Team. Long live the King!
Seth McGregorOllywood Rochon has a great personality and skiing has always been his passion. He set a goal and has tried to attain it. I can't imagine a more difficult sport than aerials. Go Olivier go!!
Jake MI vote Kaya ... she is so cool. Personality, talent, work ethic. The whole package. She's going to inspire a whole generation of young ladies to rip it up. They can play like the boys!
reid HartryHudec wins wild man of the mountain
CraigCanadians sweep the podium has got to be the top headline.
Canadians back on top shows the depth of the team and the commetment the skiers and coaches have made over the past years is paying off.
brandonKingsbury winning 6 world cup races in a row was pretty nuts to watch
Ian Yeung"Back flip for the Ages: Josh Dueck goes inverted, gains celeb fans" That's gotta be the headline of the year. The man literally broke his back for the sport he loves. Not only did we all thought he was done, he fought through adversity and proved us all wrong. He provided aspiration and courage for us all by getting back onto skis and performed a backflip!!! Heck, I can't even perform a backflip and yet he shows that we all can if we only put our hearts where our passion lays.
russell owencowboys reign
Colleen BrisbinMichael Kingsbury, great story..
Nancy MuellerDefinitely blue Magic
Phil MarquisAs a direct competitor with Mikael Kingsbury, I've had the pleasure to share the podium 3-time with him this season. We've always killed it in Freestyle skiing over the years, but what the kid has accomplished so far is remarkable. Only 19 years old, he has prooved to the world he has mentally and physically what it takes to be not only a true champion, but also a mentor for younger generation of athletes to come. I look up to him days after days and truly enjoy being part of the canadian freestyle ski team with Mikael Kingsbury. Congrats body! Sharing the podium with you as been an inspiration. Shoot out to all the other big names out there... so much have been accomplished again and again this year!
Darrin DeveauIt has to be Devon Kershaw. His performances have been out of worldly!! I sat on my indoor cycling trainer during the broadcast of the Tour de Ski and I really got into the performances and I felt like I was there. Watching him hammer away and working so hard, while at the same time I am hammering away and cheering at the same time watching it all unfold. I pulled out my XC skis after that and have been flying high ever since. Kudos to the Canadian team as a whole and all ski disciplines!! Canada owns the podium and it is not for sale!!
Deanna CarneyParty Crashers!! It was incredible moment and makes me proud to be Canadian when we take all medals in a category. Especially after all the money the US puts into their athletes its nice to knock them down a notch!
Kimberly DrodgeI love the title: "Unlucky in Love, Unstoppable Everywhere Else: Vonn dominates slopes again". I like this one because for any hopeless romantic this guy is a catch and wishes he finds that special valentines date.
hayleyParty Crashers!
DotA king is born, he is such a great competitor. Awesome athlete!
Daniel MurphySo many great moment this year from our Canadian athletes! I'm have to go with Olivier Rochon who won the Calgary WC event with the biggest/highest LANDED FdFF ever performed on snow. I think that it's safe to say this!! Wile he was in the air it went from he's going to get hurt really bad to he got 1st place! Good job Oli, glad that I saw this jump live, thanks for the emotion!
Jonathan VellnerI have to go with Josh Dueck's sit-ski backflip. There's a guy who really, really loves to ski and had to get back in the action no matter what his setbacks or the risks involved. Huge inspiration to all athletes to push through our barriers!
JOHN LUCASGETTING TACKLED BY ARNOLD Schwarzenegger
JOHN LUCASCowboys Reign: Hudec wins at Chamonix, Guay 3rd, Thomsen 5th

Nicole AbenCanadians sweeping the us national podium is a proud moment for me, especially since our athletes receive far less funding.
Jesse AbenBrady leaden, for his drive to keep going after breaking his leg so many times.
Coral PetzoldtI think you can't beat 6 in a row! I would give my vote to Mikael Kingsbury. But, congratulations to all the other athletes mentioned! Incredible achievements!
Mark CampionWithout a doubt Kershaw winning on the cross country circuit. I have nothing but admiration and jealousy for him and the team. To compete so hard and to be in such great shape. What a natural high it must be.
Grace StruthersThe Josh Dueck back flip was awesome to watch.

Ally DandyFrom being a ski racer myself, I know how hard it is to get results you want. These guys have worked very hard and have not given up. All deserve to be recognized because they are putting their all into the races these days. Whatever the circumstances, (bib number, snow, wind) they are always trying to make their Canada proud and it was their day to shine in Chamonix. I will always look up to these Canadian Cowboys

ginette4Party Crashers: Canadians score rare U.S. nationals podium sweep, yes we beat the Americans
Patricia HacheyParty Crashers: Canadians score rare U.S. nationals podium sweep. It's funny how this story gets so little mention in the U.S. press. For them the main story was Julia Ford.
Tony CatojoOur hometown hero - Devon Kershaw
Awesome win!
beth DDevon Kershaw for sure. I love it when world athletes are from small towns, they seem to take that pride with them all over the world. Determination and grit is what that boy has!
Brendan kBrady leman and the clean sweep
Wayne WasiliewBy far, Ben Thomsen's run on the Sochi 2014 Olympic course to finnish in second place was the best snowsport moment of the year.

Gideon DanteMy vote is for Rise of the Late Bloomers, as a first choice because is shows how important it is to have depth when investing in young Canadians. Don't just support one or two top names support they people who aren't afraid to work hard! My vote was close, followed closely by Josh's Back flip for the Ages!
